Strictness of Qatari Law

Qatar applies a “zero tolerance” policy regarding drug offenses under Law No. 9 of 1987 and its amendments. Penalties can reach capital punishment or life imprisonment for trafficking, and long prison terms for consumption or possession.

Restricted Medicines (Tramadol, Lyrica, etc.)

Many expatriates and travelers make a grave legal error by bringing medicines from their home countries that are legal there but are considered “psychotropic substances” prohibited in Qatar without an approved prescription. Common examples: Tramadol, Lyrica (Pregabalin), and certain strong antidepressants and painkillers.

Important Legal Tips

1. Do Not Carry for Friends: “Doing a favor” by carrying a package could land you in prison if it contains banned substances.
2. Medical Prescription: If you need special medication, you must have a recent prescription attested by health authorities in your country and the Qatar Embassy, and declare it immediately upon arrival at the airport.
3. Random Testing: Police have the right to conduct drug tests on anyone suspected of being under the influence (e.g., after a traffic accident). The presence of the substance in the blood is considered evidence of consumption.
